Austin Bike Zoo presents: 1st Night Costume making workshop

By Jason - Posted on 03 December 2009

12/06/2009 - 11:00am
12/06/2009 - 3:00pm

The folks from the Austin Bike Zoo are inviting the community to join them this Sunday out at the HOPE Farmers Market (5th and Waller) from 11am to 3pm for a costume building workshop:

New Years is fast approaching and the Bike Zoo is inviting folks to come celebrate with us during the 1st Night Austin Grand Procession. Bicycle animals will be rolling the streets and we will be creating a bit of new performance work. We would love to have folks join us to celebrate the joy, grace and beauty of riding bicycles by creating beautiful costumes that embody what makes them feel beautiful, graceful and amazing while pedaling. We will be doing costume making workshops around town prior to the event so come out and join us, get ideas and/or work on your own gorgeousness at home and come ride with us on New Years Eve. More details to come, but in the meantime we hope to see you this Sunday for costume fun and farmer's market goodies!

If you want to know what all this "First Night" business is all about, check out Brian Birzer's photos from last year:

Who WOULDN'T want to ride in that parade? And that was just the first year! This time around they're going to go even BIGGER, and to do it they need your help so show up Sunday and get your costuming on!

Bored AND Undead on Halloween? Join the Ride of the Zombies!

By Jason - Posted on 26 October 2009

10/31/2009 - 7:30pm

Halloween falls squarely on the WEEKEND this year, which means ripe opportunities for multiple costumed rides! I've already mentioned one of them on here, but check out what's happening later in the eventing: a ZOMBIE RIDE being hosted by PONG, the Austin Bike Zoo, and the ZOMBIE BALL:

This one's going to cruise from Cafe Mundi around 7:30pm on HALLOWEEN DAY (Saturday), ride around a bit to the tunes of PONG, meander through the East Side, and then cruise down to the Longhorn Dam area to watch some excellent fireworks. After that, they head to the ZOMBIE BALL!

Get bloody, eat some brains, and ride your bike this Halloween!

Austin Bike Zoo presents; Further Adventures of the Wheels of Wonderland!

By Jason - Posted on 22 September 2009

10/04/2009 - 11:00am

Some of y'all may have caught this show last spring, but from the sound of things the Austin Bike Zoo has a few new things cooked up for this go-round:

Due to way too much fun had by the cast we have decided to re-stage our Wheels of Wonderland show from May.
It has a few new scenes, more music and of course more bikes. I have attached the poster with more info.
Dates are
September 26th and 27th, 6pm
October 3rd and 4th, 11am
all shows will take place at Brush Park
folks are highly encouraged to ride their bikes!

Thanks for putting this production on again, Sachi, Jeremy, and the rest of the Zoo. It's VERY audience-participatory, so if you're a regular biker, or ESPECIALLY if you're an irregular biker, make sure to bring your human-powered steed to the show and join in the fun! This is also a very kid friendly event, so if you have some younger bike fans in the family, talk about a perfect opportunity to get them involved.

Frankenbike #49 - Back at the Bike Zoo, again!

By Jason - Posted on 10 August 2009

08/29/2009 - 10:00am
08/29/2009 - 5:00pm

Woah, talk about deja vu. This month's Frankenbike swap meet is going to be taking place at a familiar spot for many of us, the Austin Bike Zoo HQ! Cruise on down to 1706 17th St, and try to be there early if you want to find the good good stuff. Last time I went to one of these at the bike Zoo I walked away with a wheelset, bars, bartape, an external BB crankset/bottom bracket combo and a bash guard, and spent less than 60 bucks for EVERYTHING. Yes, the deals are just that insane. Like I said, get there earlier rather than later so all the scumbags who buy local and resell on ebay (fuck you guys, seriously) don't snatch all the good shit before you get there.

Wheels of Wonderland - re-scheduled and re-located.

By Jason - Posted on 08 May 2009

05/09/2009 - 6:00pm

Due to the cancellation of Pedal Fest, the Bike Zoo folks are going to be performing their incredibly awesome Wheels of Wonderland show at 6:00pm tomorrow, around the vicinity of 91 Red River St.

All shows are free and open to the public. Make sure to bring a bike, as there are a few moments of audience participation if you're a cyclist.

CANCELLED: Sunset Valley Pedal Fest

By Jason - Posted on 04 May 2009

05/09/2009 - 9:00am
05/09/2009 - 1:00pm

Cancelled due to "swine flu". I'm not joking.

This one's being brought to you by the Sunset Valley Arts Commission and the Austin Bike Zoo, and happens at the Toney Burger Center down in South Austin/Sunset Valley right next to the usual Sunset Valley Farmer's Market. The event is free for all ages, and they urge you to bring your bike so that you may participate in the following:

  • Bike Rodeo
  • Bike-Powered Smoothies
  • Bike Decoration Station
  • Bike Pannier Building Workshop (presented by YBP)
  • Helmet Donations (presented by ACA)
  • Wheels of Wonderland (presented by Austin Bike Zoo)
  • Bike Zoo Puppet Rides
  • Ultimate Mobile DJ (DJ Dojo)
  • Solar Generator Bike Trailer (Sustainable Waves)
  • Join the Mini Parade
  • Booths from Local Bike Organizations

Sounds like a whole lot of excellence packed into 4 hours. Check it out if you're one of those south Austin types, or if you're down for a long bike ride...
